The desire to normalize is one of the oldest desires known to man. In fact this desire is so old, it might be older than humanity itself.
What is the desire to normalize ?
The desire to normalize is life’s innate desire to maintain balance. To make whole what has been taken away. This is a desire far older than man’s ability to think rational civilized thoughts.
But we know it from different names and faces. Let’s talk about some of them.
-
The desire for revenge and the desire for justice It is one of the most primal aspects of the desire to normalize. This desire is the basis of the entire field of enquiry known as : law & justice.
-
The desire for reciprocity: to give what is owed. This is a very subtle desire, yet it forms the basis of trust, business, and interpersonal relationships.
So where does the desire to normalize arise from ? My hypothesis is that it comes from the very force of life.
Life itself is a desire to maintain balance internally in the face of chaos.
The first single cellular organisms, which formed life, faced this immensely difficult task of keeping their internal little organs organized, in the face of extreme external chaos.
Eventually they did it very well, and those who did so, were able to propagate while the rest, perished.
The desire to normalize is an extension of the same desire for balance.
One peculiar caveat of the desire to normalize is that the desire only seeks to balance, not change hierarchies or fight with higher beings. It is not a desire for promotion but it is a desire that fights against demotion. It seeks to maintain balance. Hence a man will spend an entire lifetime plotting revenge on a neighbor in order to seek justice, seek normalization, but not blame the gods for taking his lands, his cattle, and his children in sickness. Similarly a man will be afraid of his neighbor’s wrath for stealing his goat or harming his son but he will sleep peacefully after stealing the children of chickens, and slaughtering his hogs from the farm, for they are not his equals.
We must keep this peculiar caveat in mind when trying to understand - when this deep desire to normalize manifests in beings, and when it remains dormant.
